Camping & mobile home holidays in and around les Sables d’Olonne, Vendée, western France
Les Sables d’Olonne lies on the west coast of France in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region, and it has been associated with the Atlantic Ocean which it faces since its foundation in 1218. We can’t say it has been hosting camping holidays since that date but it certainly has for many years now.
This is a bustling town with a great deal going for it as well as being a Mecca for camping and mobile home holiday enthusiasts. It is the home of the Vendée Global Ocean Race for a start, and a certain Dame Ellen MacArthur is the darling of all who live here.
Les Sables was the first yachting harbour in the Vendée and is still one of the most important commercial ports on the Atlantic coast, but commerce can be forgotten for a while when you visit les Sables for a camping holiday as there much more important things to do, see and be involved in – like the beaches here.
The main beach here at les Sables is called the Grande Plage des Sables d'Olonne, a 3 KM or 2 mile long south facing sandy beach which is well supervised in the high season, and it makes an ideal safe place for family swimming and general beach fun. This beach is is well sheltered and easy to reach, and apart from that there is a total of 20 KLMs or approx 12.5 miles of what can be called untamed coastline around les Sables.
Other beaches close by are the Plage du Tanchet at the southern end of the town and this is another good option for families. The Dunes of Paracou are very popular as are the Plage Les Granges and Plage de Sauveterre, both in Olonne sur Mer but are less crowded and unsupervised. There is a naturist beach at Olonne sur Mer, at the end of Plage les Granges..... if you dare.
Altogether there is a fair range of watersports available, including sea-kayaking, paragliding, sailing, diving, deep-sea fishing and jet-skiing.
OK well that takes care of the water based activities and the beaches, but your camping holidays are probably not just about those, and you may wish to do some walking in the area, or cycling perhaps.
If so then just a wee walk or drive to the north of the town and you come to the Foret d’Olonne which is roughly 10 KMs long from end to end. Great for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting – especially the little red squirrels which live here.
Just on the southern outskirts of les Sables is a Zoo; not a large one but one which is internationally renowned for preserving endangered wildlife. I (Editor) have been here several times now and always marvel at the little monkeys which are free to roam and the parrots and other exotic birds which are free to fly.
Les Sables d’Olonne is a truly lovely place and we are certain you will so enjoy your camping or mobile home holiday here that you will come back for more of the same one day soon.
