Camping & mobile home holidays in and around Carnac, southern Brittany
There is a cluster of smallish towns all huddled together and facing the Baie de Quiberon; la Trinité, Carnac Plage and Carnac town itself, and all three are camping and mobile home holiday resorts on the south coast of Brittany.
Carnac is a delightful little place with 5 beaches of golden sand stretching over about 3.5 KMs, and there is always plenty of space here even when it becomes busy in high season, though the whole area is busy during July and August as is most of France.
Not many years ago the Carnac beach was recommended as one of the 20 best in France, and having seen a great many of them in our travels that is quite an accolade.
We are advised that there is a children’s beach club operating here and some small amusements and shows for the kids at peak times, and it is little things such as these that make a resort like Carnac an ideal venue for family camping holidays.
Apart from the beaches around Carnac and the shops, bars and restaurants which abound here, this is a place which is world famous for the prehistoric siting of 3,000 or more standing stones which form the most extraordinary group of Menhirs, or Alignments in the world. The oldest stones date from the Neolithic period, the most recent being from the Bronze Age.
There is a museum, the Musee de Prehistoire where you will find information on the standing stones which are called Menhirs, the Dolmens which are tombs, and the Cromlechs which are Menhirs in a circle. If you are interested in seeing these at close quarters you can hop on one of the little trains which take tourists round the Alignments, Carnac, Carnac Plage and la Trinité for a minimal cost. The train driver describes all the views in both French and English.
No camping holiday to Carnac would be quite complete without a trip down the Quiberon peninsular to see the most wonderful rock formations and beaches at the far end. The town of Quiberon which is on two levels is also a delight to wander round and the bottom half of the town is where all the upmarket shops are which cater for tourists.
Most people we have spoken to have really enjoyed their camping holidays in or around Carnac, and we certainly hope that you will enjoy yours just as much.
